SEM Rush is an awesome tool that lets you plug in sites and see where they rank, and what the Google adwords CPCs are. To start using it, register on the SEMrush website as a free user.

Next, plug in any site of your choice.

My girlfriend’s sister was going on holiday with her kids, and was looking for sun protection clothing for her baby. Now I never realised that baby sun protection clothes and swimwear even existed! So I looked at the site she bought her outfits from and ran that through SEM Rush:

As you can see, “baby swimwear” has a decent size search volume (for niche sites I like to concentrate on 2000 and under searches a month but over 400). Pulling up  Google’s Keyword tool, I identified some associated keywords:

Nice – not to competitive I don’t think. Now let’s see if any exact match domain names exist:

BINGO! I am now armed with keyword data, good domains, and now all I need is to build a decent site, join a couple f baby affiliate programs, push the site in search engines (with low searches, ranking is easier) and see where it takes me.

Total cost? $40 for the site and content, maybe $100 on links and 3 hours of my time. It should make more money back than that…

So my next steps would be:

1. Sign up to a lead gen program if you can find a decent one. For best results sign up to more than one.
2. Get some decent content written up. For example, when in doubt, I always look at current sites that rank, or big affiliate players. MoneySupermarket for example have a page on best cash ISA rates. Have a decent writer take a look at that page. Then ask them to knck u something of a similar quality.
3. Register a domain – if you are lucky, the ones I have highlighted will still be available.
4. Get a simple wordpress site set up, and add your content.
5. Look into running some guests posts, for example via sites like http://guestr.com/ to get decent inbound links.
6. Once your site starts ranking, improve its design and call to actions and add you affiliate links.
7. Sit back and enjoy

However, high payout programs may not convert as much, for example, say you had an affiliate site that is trying to use social media to lead generate mortgages.
